The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Nigeria Branch had its 18th Annual Conference and Gala Night on 24th and 25th October 2018 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. The theme of the Conference was: Arbitration and ADR in Africa: Challenges, Gains and Lessons for the future.
The Conference was well attended by lawyers and arbitration practitioners from within and outside Nigeria. Our Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN was the moderator at the 1st session of Day 2 of the Conference on Arbitration in Africa. She moderated insightful discussions among the panellists, who are all distinguished arbitration practitioners, namely: Dr. Gaston Kenfack Douajni, a Cameroonian Magistrate and Director of Legislation at the Ministry of Justice in Cameroon; Momoh Kadiri, Managing Partner of Mitchell Simmonds Solicitors in London; Dr. Sally El Sawah, an independent arbitration practitioner qualified to practice in France & Egypt; Thierry Ngoga, Partner at Legal Line Partners and premier Registrar of the Kigali International Arbitration Centre and Dr Lawrence Schafer, a commercial and construction lawyer in Johannesburg.
The discussions were lively, engaging and interactive, touching on landmark cases, policy changes and legislative developments from around Africa. The role of arbitral institutions and their impact on arbitration in Africa was also discussed. The feedback from participants was positive as they benefited immensely from the session.
