Port-Harcourt Refining Company Limited (“PHRC”) which is a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (“NNPC”) has become the first refinery in Africa to attain the ISO 9001:2015 certification.
The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015 Quality Management System is the world’s leading quality management standard which has been recognised internationally by over a million organisations in over 170 countries globally. The standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. A major aim of the ISO 9001:2015 is to assist companies to meet the statutory and regulatory requirements pertaining to their product while maintaining excellence in their customer service and delivery.
As the ISO 9001:2015 certification is regularly reviewed, it may be withdrawn where consistent standards not maintained or met. Accordingly, PHRC is required to maintain a good management standard in order to retain the ISO 9001:2015 certification. If PHRC continues to demonstrate its ability to operate successfully and sustainably, it is hoped that its success would help set a precedent for other subsidiaries of the NNPC and other Nigerian refineries in a bid to foster stronger confidence in the Nigerian oil and gas industry and thus, more investment.
